Linking Studies

A linking study is conducted by administering an achievement test (KTEA-3 or WIAT-III) and a cognitive ability test to the same group of examinees for the purpose of reporting correlations between their scores. The varying strengths of these correlations provide evidence to support the construct validity of each test. A linking study is also conducted to provide the necessary data (e.g., critical values, base rates) for conducting an ability-achievement discrepancy (AAD) or a pattern of strengths and weaknesses (PSW) analysis for the identification of a specific learning disability.

Table 4.1 lists the linking studies available (at the time of this book's publication) between the KTEA-3 or WIAT-III and various cognitive ability tests. As shown in the table, the KTEA-3 and WIAT-III both have linking data with the DAS-II and WISC-V. However, only the KTEA-3 is linked with the KABC-II, and only the WIAT-III is linked with the WPPSI-IV, WPPSI-V, WISC-IV, WAIS-IV, and WNV.
